Membership costs just £5 for a lifetime membership! This one-off cost should be paid by signing up to the Students’ Union (USSU) at http://ussu.info/membership and is used to fund our shows – including those we take to Edinburgh and Brighton!
We hold auditions in the first week of every term, and we do on average around four plays a term. That means there’s absolutely no excuse not to audition! But if you don’t get through, don’t be discouraged – SUDS offer plenty of other opportunities to act during term, and there are plenty of other areas in which new members can get involved.
What is required of you at an audition?

I’m thinking of accepting Sussex as my first choice this year and although I don’t study acting, I’d love to join the society
Do you guys do any comedies or musicals or anything like that or are they all hardcore dramas? Also what is the acting community like – really close / family kind of atmosphere or casual lots of people?
Do you have any previous plays on youtube or anywhere like that so I could see and get an idea of what it’s like? Thankayou!
Hi Ellie, we’d love to have you as part of the society if/when you come to Sussex. We have people who study everything from drama to physics taking part in SUDS so the fact that you don’t study it is no restriction! We put on many plays/fundraisers etc and they range from the ‘hard-core dramas’ of Pinter to complete comedies. Pretty much anyone can propose to put on any play they like, including a something they may have written themselves! We don’t do musicals (as that’s far more SMuTS-Sussex Musical Theatre Society-areas of expertise and we wouldn’t want to step on their toes!)
We have a very broad spectrum of members, stretching from people who get involved with everything possible and those who get involved with maybe one play a year; it completely varies. We’re a very close community as rehearsals will do that but we’re such a large society that everyone is included. Be sure to drop us a line if you chose to come to Sussex, and you can also find SUDS on facebook (just search ‘SUDS) to keep up to date with everything!
There are a whole load of pictures of past plays on this website but the videos aren’t up yet, a fair few will be put up over summer so you can take a look at them then.
Hi guys! I’m in Sussex since last september, and I didn’t know that you are in the University. I’m ging to stay in Brighton until March, and I was wondering if there is anything that a can do in the club. I have to go back home, because I’m from Venezuela, but I would love to to some theater as long as I’m here!

We tend to have fundraisers which you can sign up for to act, write or direct and you can join the SUDS Facebook page to keep up to date with events and plays, as well as joining the mailing list. Although all our Spring term plays have been cast, you can still help out backstage such as props, or being a stage hand, as well as lighting and sound.

Hi Kathy you can still sign up for back-stage help (props, costume, set etc) and if you want to act we are holding plenty of events throughout the term including the Shakespeare Shorts so if you find SUDS on facebook or joining the mailing list and you will receive all the information!!
